Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Making a mixtape for my girlfriend...suggestions please!

Hey everybody-
so my girlfriend has been asking me forever to make her a mixtape of some dead songs. but being a fan of many shows, i havent been able to select my favorites!

so i'm gonna throw out some songs and versions that come to mind. and i'm looking for real pinnacle dead stuff, on-pitch vocals, inspired playing, the works.

sugaree (5/7/77)
sugar magnolina (europe 72)
here comes sunshine (5/26/73)
peggy-o (5/5/77)
standing on the moon (september 90/91?)
eyes of the world (spring-fall 73, 90-91 with b. marsalis)
bertha (7/4/89, 73, 77)
let the good times roll (7/7/89 downhill from here dvd)
and we bid you goodnight (perhaps early-mid 70s?)
brokedown palace (looking for solid vocal harmonies on this one)
how sweet it is (jgb works. did the dead ever play this?)
ramble on rose (?/?/??)

feel free to input some of your own ideas that would go along with the tape. thanks for the help!

I would go with an eyes of the world from 73 or 74 - I think they better exemplify what Jerry was able to do with his guitar than the 90s marsalis ones. If you want a solid standalone version, go with 8/6/74; it's fast and hits right on, and Jerry's soloing is phenomenal. This has long been my absolute favorite version.

You should also check out versions from the summer of '73; in particular, take a look at 6/10 and 6/30. These are standouts in my opinion.

I've made many a dead mix tape for many a girlfriend, and have never quite figured it out - I've never successfully turned on a woman to the Dead. But at least I know if I ever find a woman who likes it, I can marry her immediately! Best of luck.

At least I didn't say "I could never make a woman come on the Grateful Dead journey with me" !

Brokedown and Days Between from 12/19/94. Huge.

Long story behind why I think those two tunes from the twilight era merit consideration. Just listen and you tell me......

Scarlet>Fire from the Mosque 05/25/77 would not be a bad choice

Speaking as a girl here, a guy turned me onto the GD ages ago by playing Aoxomoxoa and Anthem of the Sun. So don't underestimate the taste of us girls. Of course, then I went to a show ... which does tend to make a difference :-)

But I'd vote for any good intense version of The Other One and St. Stephen, mainly because those were definitely my entry points.

My main question, though, would be: What does SHE like? I mean, she's got to have her own taste, right? Is she just trying to get to know the music, or has she heard enough that you can see her preferences?

If she hasn't really heard all that much, you might consider acoustic GD. Very approachable. But don't assume that softer, contemplative songs or songs that reference women are going to be the only ones to grab the girls!

Just my two cents :-)

Oh...okay...nevermind; thought you were talking about my wife and the snake...more Dire's style I suppose.

How about Pau, Kobe and Artest, eh?

Yea, nice they have a work release program that allows them to play.

They will likely take it in 6 after the game 1 win.

Pau's not in that group; but, hey, if I wanted role models, I think I'd insist they actually worked for a living.

I'd have to nominate the Augusta 84 Dew. For me, a high point for Jerry's vocal work on this tune. His ragged emotional growls bring this monster to another level. That and this song in general is quite accessable to the non-freak and is almost guaranteed to send chills up the spine of even the most hardened "Why do you need 87 versions of one song?"-haters.

Brokedown Palace from England '72 is nice. And I think you should throw in an Althea and surely a Ripple.

Why didn't they sing the rest of Mr. Belafonte's lyrics:

Ever since the world began
Woman was always teaching man
And I you listen to my bid attentively
I goin’ tell you how she smarter than me

Samson was the strongest man long ago
No one could a beat him, as we all know
Until he clash with Deliah on top of the bed
She told them all the strength was in the hair of his head

You meet a girl at a pretty dance
Thinking that you would stand a chance
Take her home, thinking she’s alone
Open de door you find her husband home

I was treating a girl independently
She was making baby for me
When de baby born and I went to see
Eyes was blue it was not by me

Garden of Eden was very nice
Adam never work in Paradise
Eve meet snake, Paradise gone
She make Adam work from that day on

Methusaleh spent all his life in tears
Lived without a woman for 900 years
One day he decided to have some fun
The poor man never lived to see 900 and one

...that's right...

I found that studio recordings such as Wake of The Flood and Terrapin mixed sparingly with live recordings of China/Rider Scarlet/Fire worked well. She's also got to happy with you while you're listening to it together. The listening needs to evoke good memories.

They Love Each Other - 12/26/1980 solid vox and Brent has a killer keys solo

Gotta say I dig the vox on Peggy-O from the same show too, heck it's an all around pretty good show

you're right- the TLEO is very nice. i'm more of a fan of the up-beat 72-74 versions, but brent adds a feeling all his own.
